Fire a real neuron

This neuron runs on the Hodgkin–Huxley equations, the Nobel Prize-winning model of how nerve cells send signals. Give it a push and watch an action potential happen, slowed down from 2 milliseconds.

The math behind it

Four equations, one spike

The voltage changes as charged ions flow through three kinds of channels. Each channel's opening is its own small equation, so the whole neuron is four linked differential equations, solved here 100,000 times per simulated second.

C·dV/dt = I − gNam³h(V − ENa) − gKn⁴(V − EK) − gL(V − EL)
Alan Hodgkin and Andrew Huxley found this in 1952 from experiments on the squid giant axon, and won the 1963 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
